Matchup - Saturday, October 06, 2012
Circle City Classic was created under the visionary leadership of the late Rev. Charles Williams, former president of Indiana Black Expo, Inc. and other Indianapolis civic leaders in 1984. The Circle City Classic has served as a fundraiser to support the Indiana Black Expo, Inc./Circle City Classic Scholarship Program and the operations of Indiana Black Expo, Inc. and the Indiana Sports Corporation. Since its inception, it has evolved from a single event into a week long experience that attracts nearly 200,000 attendees from all over America. It is widely considered to be one of the top classic events in the nation!
The Classic has also served as the showcase for America’s finest, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), their football teams, marching bands, coaches, and celebrities. During our first 26 years, great coaches including the, late Eddie Robinson (Grambling State University) have called plays from the sidelines. NFL greats Jerry Rice, late Steve “Air” McNair, Hugh Douglass, and Robert Mathis have exploited opponents on the field. Additionally, numerous celebrities have appeared, performed, or been recognized at the Classic over the years including Muhammad Ali, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, the late Johnnie Cochran, Tom Joyner, Tony Dungy, Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin, Nick Cannon, Kelly Rowland, Greg Oden and Mike Conley, just to name a few.
While in Indianapolis, be sure to enjoy the Classic experience which includes a host of events for everyone including the Classic Coaches Luncheon and Major Taylor Award Presentation, the Classic Pep Rally, the Circle City Classic High School Showcase, the Friday Nite Cabaret, the Comedy Jam, the Classic Parade, and VIP parties.
